Water Treatment Plant Upgrade — Real-Time Quality Monitoring

Regional Utilities Provider·March 2025

Installation of an online water quality monitoring system for a Bahrain wastewater treatment facility, enabling continuous compliance tracking and early-warning detection.

Project Overview

A regional utilities operator in Bahrain sought to replace manual grab-sampling with a continuous, automated water quality monitoring system at its primary wastewater treatment facility — covering inlet, intermediate, and final effluent streams.

The Challenge

Manual sampling had resulted in delayed detection of process upsets, leading to two regulatory non-conformances in the preceding year. The facility also required monitoring of a wide parameter set — pH, DO, turbidity, conductivity, BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia — across three independent process streams simultaneously, with integration into an existing SCADA system.

Our Solution

EnviPro deployed Hach multiparameter online analysers across all three streams, with automatic cleaning systems to minimise maintenance intervals. An alarm-management layer was built into the SCADA integration, triggering SMS and email alerts when any parameter approached its consent limit. The system was designed with full redundancy on critical measurements.

Results

Zero regulatory non-conformances in the twelve months following commissioning. Process upsets are now detected within minutes rather than hours, allowing operators to respond before effluent limits are breached. Maintenance costs fell by 30 % compared to the previous manual-sampling regime.

The early-warning capability alone has paid back the entire system investment. We now have complete visibility of our process, 24 hours a day.
